Al Howard
The son of former Australian Open winner Tom Howard, no one has had a hand in the design of as many golf courses in Australia as Al Howard, who passed away at the ripe old age of 100. Born on May 8, 1913, Al was previously the oldest living PGA Professional in Australia and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his services to golf.
One of his most highly acclaimed ventures was the marvelous Tasmanian Golf Club layout at Barilla Bay in Hobart. Many golfers have rated Tasmania's 550-meter third hole as one of Australia's most spectacular - a comment echoed by none other than the great Jack Nicklaus.
Al also had a hand in courses like Asquith, Avondale, Bankstown, Bayview, Belmont, Bowral, Byron Bay, Cabramatta, Carnarvon, Chatswood, Cumberland, Eastlakes, Elanora, Gordon, Gosford, Taree, St Michaels, the list is nearly endless, making his resume really quite stunning.
Al Howard was a dedicated and much respected PGA member, giving much of his time to the development of the association and to golf in Australia.
