Charles Ankrom

Charles Ankrom, an American golf course architect who died at the age of 72, spent most of his life in Palm City and had an impact on the local golf community, and elsewhere, which won't soon be forgotten. The noted golf course designer's work extended across the Treasure Coast, including designing courses at Martin Downs, Sebastian Municipal, Panther Woods, and Sandpiper Bay (now known as Club Med), as well as across the state, country, and world.

Charles' philosophy toward course design was geared toward “classic, traditional” golf courses, spiced with modern and functional accents that made his work unique. His main objective was never making courses that were impossible to play. He has designed hard courses, but he always wanted to build courses where players would have fun no matter what tee box they were hitting from.

Charles Ankrom earned several awards including the first annual Presidential Citation by the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1993 for personally organizing and administrating an industry response to attempts to legislate landscape licensing requirements for golf course architects in the state of Florida by the Board of Landscape Architects.
