Hedley Vernon Morcom

In 'A Round Forever' by John Scarth, Mike Clayton wrote in the foreword: "Vern Morcom was clearly one of the most highly regarded men in Australia's golfing community and aside from his full-time employment at Kingston Heath, was a prolific consultant to golf clubs and was engaged to design, modify or construct numerous golf courses throughout Australia."

When Hedley Vernon Morcom completed his schooling, Vern Morcom worked with his father Mick at Royal Melbourne, learning all aspects of maintaining and developing a golf course. He also assisted in building the club's famous West Course to Alister MacKenzie's design.

Vern became a partner in the firm M.A. Morcom & Son which consulted to local authorities and golf clubs, including Kingswood, Medway, Torquay, and Yarra Bend. In 1928, he took over as the course superintendent at Kingston Heath Golf Club, a position he would hold for 40-years.

After Hedley Vernon Morcom's father died in 1937, Vern continued to work on courses throughout Australia at places like Royal Queensland, Royal Hobart, Glenelg, and Curlewis, with Spring Valley widely considered his best solo work. He always declined invitations to work overseas and was content to design courses closer to home, following MacKenzie's example in using the natural features of the land to highlight his work.
