Michael Cocking
"I first became interested in golf watching Curtis Strange beat Nick Faldo early one Monday morning before school in 1988. Soon after I convinced my dad to take me to the local driving range. As a keen artist, I soon found myself scribbling golf holes all over my schoolbooks and 15 years later my interest in golf and art came together as golf renderings."
A former elite Amateur golfer, Michael Cocking is the primary designer at the Australian-based firm of Ogilvy Clayton Cocking and Mead (OCCM).
Originally working with Mike Clayton and his partners John Sloan and Bruce Grant, Cocking has been involved in projects like Royal Queensland, RACV Healesville, Torquay, and the expensive Peninsula Kingswood redevelopment. He was also the lead designer on the Bonnie Doon and Royal Canberra redesigns.
"Having a good eye is an advantage when it comes to the visual side of golf course design, just as it is when doing a drawing or painting. Knowing if something looks too busy, unbalanced, or out of scale can be just as useful out on site as it is at the drawing table."
