Milton Coggins

Milton Durfree Coggins was born on July 13, 1930, to an influential third-generation Phoenician family – Milton’s grandfather, Lewis W. Coggins, was a former Mayor of Arizona. He graduated from the University of Arizona where he met his wife, Diane, to whom he was married for 60 years.

Milt, as he was known, became a golf professional at Moon Valley Country Club and White Mountain Country Club. In addition to being an accomplished golf instructor, Coggins initiated programs and tournaments for children and teens. He later owned and operated Coronado Golf Course in Scottsdale for many years.

He designed his first course in 1956 while he was a golf professional at Encanto Municipal Golf Course. He would then practice from 1961 until his retirement in the mid-1970s. Although, as a result of his refusal to retire altogether, and an enduring interest and knowledge of native plants, trees, and cacti, he oversaw the landscaping of Scottsdale's Grayhawk and Whisper Rock Golf Courses, as well as Hermosillo, Mexico's Los Lagos golf course.

Milton was elected into American Society of Golf Course Architect as a regular member in 1970 and was granted Fellow status in 1973. Coggins served the ASGCA for 24 years until his death in 1994.
