Sam Berriman

Sam Berriman was a Victorian-born golf course designer active in Australia in the 1940s and '50s. Berriman's greatest talent when it came to securing course design contracts was often said to be the strength of his personality.

When Berriman branched out into architecture himself in 1946, he simply would not take no for an answer from any club. He tendered for many projects against well-known golf architect Alex Russell and beat him almost every time.

This focus on pursuing contracts along with his considerable talents meant that Berriman was responsible for course designs at clubs including Horsham, Sale, Shepparton, Southern, Latrobe, Keysborough, and Lakes Entrance.

Berriman also applied his art to the creation and development of Cranbourne Golf Course after his respected work at Huntingdale. Five times British Open Champion Peter Thomson described Sam as an architect of rare talent and his Cranbourne design as "a classic with this great course being worthy of any major tournament."
