Sloan Morpeth

Born in 1897 Sloan Morpeth worked as a bank clerk with the National Bank in Waihi after finishing his schooling. Following the outbreak of World War One Sloan enlisted on the 24th of January 1917 with the Auckland Infantry Regiment.

He served in France and was wounded in April 1918 before returning to New Zealand in 1919 where he became a superb golfer, winning two New Zealand Amateur titles and the New Zealand Open Championship in the 1920s.

Sloan Morpeth moved to Australia in 1929 and became secretary of the Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne. After retiring in the mid-1960 he became a golf course designer and was instrumental in the development of several highly-regarded courses such as Portsea, Peninsula Kingswood , and Commonwealth Golf Club.

Sloan died in 1970 aged 73 and was survived by his wife and daughter.
