Ted Robinson, Sr.

Born on May 17, 1923, in Long Island, California, Theodore G. Robinson, Sr. was a prolific golf course designer and architect. Ted, as he is commonly referred to, was an undergraduate at the University of California in Berkeley but received a master’s degree in planning from the University of Southern California in 1948. He started practicing golf course architecture in 1954 and would continue doing so for the next 50 years.

Ted Robinson, Sr. designed more than 150 golf courses in the US and all over the world, including Japan, Hawaii, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and a lot more. He is notable for promoting the use of bodies of water as primary hazards in golf and is an expert at incorporating water features into his golf course designs. Such was Ted’s expertise; he earned the moniker “King of Waterscapes” in the world of golf course architecture.

Robinson, Sr. joined the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) in 1973, served as president from 1983 to 1984, and ascended to ASGCA Fellow in 1995. His son, Ted Robinson, Jr. is also a golf course architect who has followed in his father’s footsteps. The two worked together on several courses before Ted’s passing on March 2, 2008.
