Thad Layton

When Arnold Palmer and his firm, the Arnold Palmer Design Company, decided to completely renovate Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge in 2009, one of the brilliant architects that re-designed the original 18-hole Championship / Challenger course was Thad Layton. Now 46, Layton is Senior Architect and Vice President at the Arnold Palmer Design Company, the firm he’s been with since graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Mississippi in 2000.

As a student, Layton won first place in the annual Mackenzie Lido Prize for Golf Course Architecture. Today, with a degree in Landscape Architecture and Turfgrass Management, and six years after Palmer’s passing, Layton carries on the legacy of his hero, friend, and mentor – creating golf courses that blend seamlessly into the natural environment. An endeavor achievable only through a deep immersion with the land, Layton also believes that a golf course must be fun and interesting to play on and that to be considered great, a golf course must elevate the mind and spirit of the player.

Since joining the Arnold Palmer Design Company, Layton has been directly involved in more than 60 projects both locally and globally. He has completed projects in Florida, Arizona, Washington, Wyoming, and in his home state of Colorado. Also counted among his numerous credits are golf courses in Brazil, Costa Rica, Uruguay, China, Kazakhstan, Ireland and in golf’s most famous home, Scotland.

These days, Layton attends to the many requests and needs of existing clients – mostly re-designing or renovating golf properties that he had a hand in developing. Never-ending improvement was, after all, an essential part of the Palmer philosophy.

Layton is a Registered Landscape Architect and has served on the Urban Land Institute’s Recreation Development Council. He is also a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architect’s Education Committee. Currently, he lives in Colorado with his wife and two sons.
