Tom Jackson

Thomas R. Jackson is a well-known golf course designer, who has spent over 30 years in the industry. In those years, he has established his name as the designer or constructor of more than 100 layouts situated all over the United States. Of these public and resort projects, some of his best work includes the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, Arrowhead Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, and The River Club in Litchfield Beach.

Jackson started his career by finishing an architectural degree in 1965. Since then, he's focused on building golf courses which he describes as "a perfect way to get outdoors." His success story did not happen easily, as Jackson had to send out 35 resumes before landing his first job in the industry. The only one that contacted him out of all those applications was the legendary golf architect, Robert Trent Jones. After a couple of years, Jackson also worked for George W. Cobb and later started his own architectural firm in 1971.

Tom Jackson's name continues to be popular in the golf course design world. When asked about his personal favorites, he mentioned that the Links O' Tryon in Campobello was one of his top choices. "This is one of my favorites to play because we weren't trying for a lot of length or difficulty. It's on a small piece of land, so we had to maximize the shot values of the property. It's a course where you don't have to hit driver on a lot of holes, but it's still challenging."

He then described The River Club course in Litchfield Beach by saying, "I think it's a great golf course. What's amazing is nowadays, you'll spend $200,000 to $500,000 on clearance of the property; we built the entire course for that."
