The private and very highly regarded Abiko Golf Club is situated close to Lake Teganuma near the city of Abiko in Japan's Chiba Prefecture. Since its opening in 1930 Abiko has been one of Japan's most famous golf courses, having hosted the Japan Open, the Japan Senior Open, and the Japan Women's Open Golf Championships. Isao Aoki, Yoshiro Hayashi, and other professional golfers, as well as amateur players, have launched their careers here.
The club features an impressive 18-hole parkland layout originally designed by Rokuro Akaboshi, who was an eager student of golf design and followed the famed Charles H. Alison closely on his travels through Japan. Like Kasumigaseki East, the course was originally conceived with single greens and had a distinctly British feel, the bunkering being classically shaped, rugged, and grassed faced and not unlike those built by Harry Colt who was the mentor and partner of Akaboshi's teacher, Alison.
Golf architect Brian Silva and Kye Goalby remodeled the now 6,923-yard course under a "one green" theme in 2013, garnering Best International Renovation Award honors by U.S.-based Golf Magazine. In addition to a return to single greens on every hole, the pair refurbished tees and bunkers as part of this major refurbishment of the par 72 layouts.
The clubhouse at Abiko Golf Club offers members and their guests a comfortable lounge along with bar and dining options. There are also ample practice facilities including a driving range and short-game practice area for golfers to take advantage of and the Pro shop can assist with equipment needs as well as provide caddie services.
