The City of Arcadia Municipal Golf Course was designed by Ted Eller and is located in the beautiful DeSoto County city of Arcadia. Not long after the city was founded, Arcadians spearheaded by A.C. Polk, began insisting on the creation of a city golf course to attract more tourists. So, in 1917, the Arcadia Golf and Auto Club was organized and received support from Albert W. Gilchrist, Florida’s 20th Governor and a keen golf enthusiast.
Gilchrist offered a long term lease, free of charge, on land that he owned, for the construction of a 9-hole golf course. However, the golf course was never built due to World War I, so, in 1919, Arcadians again took up the matter of the golf course.
The golf club engaged the services of Harry Cowie to design the 9-hole layout and construction began in the fall of 1922. On Christmas day, several matches were played on the course to celebrate its official opening, though only a few holes were open. All nine holes were completed in 1923.
In 2001, the City added another nine holes making Arcadia Municipal Golf Course a full 18-hole layout. The City also began a renovation of the existing section of the golf course. After its completion, players at Arcadia Municipal now enjoy a 5,865-yard, par 72 golf course, which has a good pace of play, friendly staff, and nice greens.
The City of Arcadia Municipaloffers plenty of other amenities to its members and visitors, including a driving range, golf simulator, and banquet facilities. This club also offers hour-long specialist golf clinics for beginners and experienced players alike.
