Located in the heart of The Villages retirement community in southwest Florida, the Cane Garden Country Club is a semi-private 27-hole golf course divided into three distinct nines, Hibiscus, Allamanda, and Jacaranda. The entire par 108 layout is deemed by many as one of Sumter County’s most naturally beautiful routings, where the pursuit of “birdies” is equal to the time one might spend “bird” watching.
With each 18-hole variation at Cane Garden measuring around 7,000-yards from the longest tees, this Clifton, Ezell and Clifton-designed golf course is particularly special in the eyes of golfers as it plays around a 140-acre eagle preserve. From the fifth tee, one can the spot nests of Bald Eagles and Burrowing Owls. Not only that, Southeast American Kestrels, a species of falcon, are also plentiful.
Aside from the pristine natural surroundings of the country club, the most arresting feature of Cane Garden is the different characteristics of its trio of nines. Allamanda, which is the largest of them all, has wider fairways, most noticeable if golfers have just come from the crown jewel course, Hibiscus, which is filled with towering oaks. Lastly, Jacaranda takes something of a middle ground, starting rather open before encountering more trees and water after crossing St. Charles Place.
From beginners to pro golfers, all are welcome to use the Cane Garden Country Club’s world-class practice facilities. The putting green and the chipping green are recommended for a fun, relaxing exercise round to sharpen one’s skills before stepping out onto the fairways. Several teaching professionals are also available for private golf lessons, and the club also provides club and cart rental services.
With a back patio that looks west over a small pond and the Hibiscus layout’s ninth hole, the Cane Garden clubhouse is widely considered to have one of the best sunset views in The Villages. Here, both members and guests can visit the pro shop, use the swimming pool and billiards room, or dine in the on-site restaurant.
