Crystal Downs Country Club is a private country club and lakefront community in Lake Township, Benzie County, Michigan. Crystal Downs is something of a hidden gem and despite being consistently ranked among the top courses in the United States the only tournament of note the club has hosted has been the 1991 U.S. Senior Amateur, due to its location far from population centers.
The golf course and clubhouse are situated on a narrow strip of sandy, rolling land between Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake. This fortuitous location affords expansive views of both lakes, ever differing sunrises and sunsets, and fairly constant, invigorating winds. The par 70 courses were designed to use the natural, hilly terrain as the basis for the layout, with no artificial features.
Crystal Downs Country Club was designed by golf course architects Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell in 1929 the 6,518-yard (5,960-metre) layout offers views of Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake. Crystal Downs remains unaltered from its original design and represents one of the finest examples in the world of Dr. MacKenzie's work.
