Considered the oldest public golf course in Orange County in particular, and in the Central Florida area in general, Dubsdread Golf Course is Orlando’s very own home course since it’s within the immediate vicinity – just ten minutes away – of Downtown Orlando. Dubsdread Golf Course is also just twenty minutes away from the Orlando International Airport.

The original designer of Dubsdread Golf Course was the owner himself – Carl Dann. Legend has it that he created the course layout by walking the land with friends and hitting balls. Wherever a ball landed, a sand trap was dug. He also came up with the name Dubsdread by combining the golf term “Dubs” – which referred to a novice player, and the word “Dread” which described the challenge awaiting the uninitiated.

Dubsdread debuted as Orlando’s very first major public golf course in 1924. From 1945 to 1947, Dubsdread Golf Course played host to the Orlando Open. Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, and Claude Harmon are just some of the golf legends who’ve graced this historic course.

In 2008, thirty years after being acquired by the city government in 1978, Dubsdread Golf Course underwent extensive renovation. All 18-holes were updated and the 17th and 18th fairways, which up until that time lay apart as a street kept these separate, were finally annexed to the rest of the course.

Dubsdread Golf Course is, generally, characterized by narrow fairways and heavily bunkered “postage stamp” greens. Having plenty of contours, the greens require careful attention. Whether beside greens or along fairways, sand traps are well placed. Overall, precision is a must to conquer the layout.

Residents of Orlando are eligible for special discounts and membership packages are also offered.  At the clubhouse, there’s a Pro Shop and a full-service restaurant – the Tap Room. Other amenities for golfers include practice greens, a driving range, a chipping and pitching area, golf lessons, as well as club and cart rentals.

Golf Course Resort & Community

Dubsdread Golf Course

With the historic Dubsdread Golf Course deeply embedded not only into the geography of College Park but also into its social and recreational life, golf homeowners of the community are enviably placed. Historic, nostalgic, and inclusive, are three distinguishing features that point to Dubsdread Golf Course as the right place to put down roots and live out one’s story.

College Park, which surrounds the neighborhood, instantly gives the impression that the community is adjacent to a college. In this case, the name originated from the theme of its streets – that of famed American universities. Dubsdread Golf Course, on the other hand, is a conjunction of the golf term for the novice, Dubs, and the word Dread – referring to the difficulty of the golf course.

But prospective golf home buyers should quickly dismiss any suggestion that this community is dreaded. In fact, many residents would never imagine ever leaving. There’s a sense of belonging in addition to the neighborhood’s quaint atmosphere that makes them stay.
