The private Friar's Head golf club is located six miles north of Riverhead on New York's Long Island and only a short distance from Shinnecock Hills. This visually impressive 18-hole course can be somewhat intimidating when seen for the first time and this first impression is reinforced by the creative and challenging routing devised by the design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.
The Friar's Head layout runs through a combination of rugged, wooded sand dunes and former farmland. One of the most noticeable features of the course is the scale of many of its features and hazards. Some of the greens are enormous, ranging in size from 3,000 to 18,000-square feet, whilst the bunkers are often bearded as well as huge and there are also 200-foot tall cliffs to the north of the property.
Although carts are available at Friar's Head walking is recommended. The club also provides caddies for hire which are mandatory as well as very helpful as there are no yardage markers on these challenging par 71 courses.
Along with the Pro shop Friar's Head has both a range facility, a short game area, and a putting green that are of exceptionally high standards. The speed of the practice greens is the same as on the rest of the course and serves as a great way to get your eye in before starting play. The clubhouse is well appointed with a billiard room and library on the second floor and provides bar and dining options.
