Situated approximately 10-kilometres east of Bangalore's city center is the Karnataka Golf Association's 18-hole golf course. Such is the quality of Karnataka that in 2012 it became the first venue outside New Delhi or Kolkata to host the Indian Open.
Building commenced on the Peter Thomson designed course in 1986 and local enthusiasts created this 125-acre golfing oasis and its initial 9-hole track from the old Chalaghatta swamp. Within three years another nine holes were laid out and the full par 72 layout was made available to members.
The 7,219-yard layout has excellent tree-lined fairways of hybrid Bermuda Tiffway, however, the layout plays more like a links-style course due to the flattish terrain and shallow bunkering. The Bermuda Tiff Dwarf greens are true running and offer interesting contours. They are also known to be quite fast with stimpmeter readings above ten during tournaments.
In 2008 an extensive upgrade of the course was completed by Swan Golf Design to improve drainage. Since then the course has never been closed due to flooding, even in the worst of the monsoon season.
The Karnataka Golf Association clubhouse facilities provide golfers with a well-stocked Pro Shop with caddies available for hire. There is also a flood-lit driving range with synthetic bays and grass tees. The clubhouse has both a bar and restaurant and there is a wellness center for members that offers a spa, swimming pool, and gymnasium.
