Situated on the south-western shore of Port Phillip Bay - 20 kilometers from the Melbourne CBD - Kooringal Golf Club is a hidden gem of Victorian golf.
Kooringal's front nine are simply fun holes before the 5th, where the challenge sets in. This par 3 requires a good hit across the water to the heavily undulating, tiered, and left sloping green. The back 9 is where play ramps up significantly. The 15th hole has a furiously challenging green, meaning a precise 3 iron shot from the tee box is required to make par.
Superintendent Tay Wilson has kept the course immaculate, with true running greens and meticulously kept bunkers. A reticulation and irrigation system is soon to be servicing all 18 holes. Wilson's dedication to his craft has seen him cherry-picked to be part of the ground staff at the world-famous Augusta National Golf Club during the US Masters.
The clubhouse has a popular bar, bistro, and gaming facility. Its unique selling point, however, is the golf simulator. Players can elect to have a 15-minute practice before hitting the greens or to play an entire round of virtual golf at a variety of world-famous locations. The system gives players their own personalized data, analytics, and replays to enhance their game.
Kooringal Golf Club may be based on the soft sands of Melbourne's western beach suburbs and hidden away, but its fantastic challenges make it a must-do round. Players can always rely on the club's proud ground staff and know the course will always play to its design, with a well-serviced bar and restaurant waiting at the end.
