For generations, South Australian's have made Victor Harbour their holiday spot. Just an hour away from Adelaide are crystalline beaches, the iconic long jetty, and McCracken Golf Club. With hills plentiful in the background, it's no surprise luxury homesteads sit along the cusp of this par 72, 18 hole course.

The abundant lakes, ponds, and bunkers seem an unavoidable challenge at McCracken. Though plentiful, most can be overcome with good play. There can be dynamic play at the course, as some players battle the hazards repetitiously while others see them as simply cosmetic. The natural geography of the area does not seem especially conducive to a golf course, but it's here that architect Tony Cashmore has made his mark. The 'blank canvas' means there is an unmistakable variation in holes, giving all players a chance to showcase their strengths and tackle their weaknesses.

Hole 14 is a notable example of McCracken's hazards. A lake sits between the tee box and the bunker-flanked fairway. Working uphill, the hole is referred to as 'the valley of sin,' which doesn't weaken at the pin where balls are seemingly magnetized to the three surrounding bunkers. The roll here can be unforgiving and the prestige housing along the hole can feel like watchful eyes.

Those in charge of McCracken have an endearing intent to make the course as strong as possible, with well-kept greens and regular updates taking place at other parts of the clubs. Holidaymakers visiting every season should be pleasantly surprised by a better course upon each visit.
