The Mt Derrimut Golf and Community Club, formerly known as the Sunshine Golf Club and renamed in 2018, originated in 1923. Open to the public and located just 16 kilometers from the Melbourne CBD the club's 18-hole course has undulating Santa Anna grass fairways, well-bunkered grass greens, and five attractive lakes.
The change came about when one of Australia's largest developers, Australand, approached the formerly private Sunshine Golf Club with an offer to build a new championship golf course and clubhouse on the Mount Derrimut site. Phil Ryan's design firm Pacific Golf Design was approached by Australand to develop several concepts for the new golf course and in association with golfer Craig Parry, who acted as a design consultant, refined the final product to create a par 72 layout measuring 6,204 metres.
Members voted overwhelmingly for the proposal and planning started in earnest in 2003 when PCD developed detailed landscape concepts and golf feature detail. A unique aspect of the course, which opened for play in 2007, is the extensive heritage-listed dry stone walls that are incorporated into the layout. There is one special rear tee that even requires a shot over one of the walls for best placement into the green.
The Mt Derrimut Golf and Community Club provide golfers with a well-stocked Pro-shop and there is a practice range, putting green and pitching, and bunker practice area. The modern clubhouse houses a lounge, bar, restaurant function rooms, and the mini-golf precinct.
