Narooma is the indigenous word for 'clear blue waters.' Cradling the Pacific Ocean and located on the Eurobodalla Nature Coast, Narooma Golf Club fits the name. An Australian top 100 course for over two decades currently the 22nd best public course in the country, this is a magnificent piece of coastline with intelligent golfing architecture, designed by John Spencer.
Taking full advantage of the spectacular cliff tops, undulating mounds, and sea views, this par 72, near-6000 meter 18 hole is one of Australia's finest. Combining a links-style front 9 featuring wide, undulating fairways built along cliffs with stunning Pacific Ocean views, the course's first third tracks the edge of the cliff.
Some holes rival the famous holes at Pebble Beach, notably the par 3 3rd, hole known as 'Hogan's Hole' with an ocean carry from cliff top to green. Initially getting its name from a Paul Hogan television advertisement, it's now famed in its own right. Playing across and along the edge of the ocean requires absolute precision. Less of a 'signature hole' and more of a golfing icon, it isn't Australia's finest hole, but it's certainly close. The tee shot here is fraught with danger with the ocean claiming balls miss-hit left or long of the green.
The back nine is more parkland and played through tall timbers in a 'fairy-dell' environment complete with a lake winding between holes. The sloping greens are fast, true, and highly rated
With Kikuyu fairways and bentgrass greens across the full course, the greens run truer and more consistent. Naturally, the wind can prove a challenging element and make tight holes all the less allowing. The back half goes inland however and while the views are more typical - with native trees along the fairway - it is easier to find a low score.
A 'bucket list' course for many Australian golfers, Narooma is an equidistant four-and-a-half-hour drive to Sydney and Melbourne and two and a half hours east of Canberra. However, the airports of Moruya and Merimbula are less than an hour from the course.
With the South Coast's rugged coastline visible to the north, Montague Island to the east, and Glasshouse Rocks to the south, the clubhouse offers stunning views. There is even a whale watching platform complete with binoculars.
The clubhouse has multiple bars and dining options and caters to functions end events. Golfers also have the pro shop available as well as practice facilities.
