The private New South Wales Golf Club is situated on the northern headland of the historic Botany Bay, approximately a 20-minutes drive from the Sydney CBD. Located in the suburb of La Perouse, it is flanked by the rugged cliffs of Henry Head and the prominent headland of Cape Banks.
A links-style course featuring couch fairways with bent greens and set amongst the hills and valleys that lead to the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline, the layout at the New South Wales Golf Club is considered to be one of the toughest in the country. The course consistently ranks highly on both domestic and international rankings and has hosted the Australian Open.
The original course was devised by the great Dr. Alister MacKenzie in December 1926 and is often referred to as 'Cypress Point Down under'. Following the completion of Dr. MacKenzie's plan, some necessary alterations to the routing of the course were performed by E.L. Apperly between 1932 and 1937. Apperly also oversaw restoration and lengthening of the course to attain AGU Championship Status after World War Two.
This walk or cart Championship course has limited public access on weekdays and is only available to members and their guests on weekends. Owing to the challenging nature of the course the maximum handicap for men is 27 and 36 for women. The club features some of the most extensive practice facilities in Sydney including a full-length driving range, chipping greens, and a putting green located adjacent to the Pro shop which offers repair services as well as merchandise. Caddies and fore caddies are also available. After the play, golfers can unwind in the extensive bar and restaurant and the club can also cater to events and functions as well as meetings and conferences.
