Opened in 1953, Oarai Golf Club in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, provides its members with one of the finest private 18-hole golf courses in the country. Limited access is also available to the public making this remarkable layout which lies an hour and a half from central Tokyo and 30-minutes from Mito particularly special.

Seiichi Inoue was one of the most in-demand designers in Japan in the years between the end of the war and Japan's celebrated and pivotal Canada Cup victory in 1957. His par 72 course at Oarai Golf Club is one of the rare Japanese links-style layouts to be built right on the ocean, though the holes themselves are often defined more by the age-old black pine trees that were planted as a barrier against the erosion of the shoreline before golf was played here.

There is a rural feel to the site that extends even to the relatively recent clubhouse. In many places, the tree branches render the rolling and otherwise generous fairways somewhat tight acting as ‘hazards in the air. The greens are likewise spacious in proportion to the overall dimensions of the course but are kept interesting with hidden perturbations. Such is the quality and challenge of Oarai Golf Club's 7,190-yard layout the club has hosted most of the significant events in Japanese golf, including the 1998 Japan Open.

Caddies are mandatory at the club which is walking only and there is a driving range for members and their guests to warm up on before a roundGolfers can also take advantage of the club's well-stocked Pro shop and the clubhouse has a comfortable full-service lounge area as well as a restaurant.
