First designed and built under the direction of noted golf course designer Howard Watson, and his then apprentice John Watson, Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquet Club first opened to the public in 1969. In 2007, dedicated city leaders saw the immense value in redesigning the 18-hole championship golf course and selected John Sanford's design firm to make their mark on the old layout with a $7million dollar renovation.
The renovation included new lakes, bunkers, tees, and grass as well as a new drainage system throughout the par 72 courses. New chipping greens and practice bunkers have made this course a municipal favorite among locals and visitors alike. The Pembrokes Lakes Golf and Racquet Club's 6,815-yard layout is now a prime example of how upgrading a public course can pay dividends for the municipality.
Most visitors to Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquet Club are impressed by the quality of the course and ongoing maintenance, with the sand traps, fast greens, and smooth fairways all kept in excellent condition. Like many south Florida golf courses, Pembroke Lakes occasionally has wetness problems in the fairways, but the club is very proactive and ropes these areas off, so players don't drive through the wet areas and damage the fairways.
Golfers will find plenty of great facilities at Pembroke Lakes with a clubhouse bar and restaurant, a pro shop, a grass driving range, and oversized putting green. The modern golf carts also feature a handy onboard GPS system. Other sporting and recreational activities available at the club include tennis on one of nine hard courts or five clay courts as well as the swimming pool.
