Less than an hour south of Perth, near the coastal town of Rockingham and situated in a magnificent bushland setting, the publicly accessible Rockingham Golf Club offers a golf course as natural as can be achieved in the metropolitan area.

The club was born on the 28th July 1947 at the Trocadero Tearoom when 24 interested persons gathered together to discuss the organization to build a golf course. The first nine holes were roughly bulldozed out of the sand dunes and the Rockingham Hotel was the golfers' clubhouse.

Subsequently, a lease for 200-acres was granted and the Club became incorporated. An 18-hole golf course was designed by Tom Howard and work was started by members and machinery on loan. The clubhouse was opened by Governor Sir Charles Gairdner in 1958. 3

On the 9th March 1985, Rockingham Golf Club moved to its current location at Elanora Drive. Designed by Murray Dawson, a leading golf course architect, the course was carved out of the virgin bush, and on Opening Day, at least 400 golf balls were lost! This has in time been rectified, and the club now enjoys a fairly flat layout of which holes 1 to 9 can be classed as golf links,s and holes 10 to 18 feature more trees and better soil. cde3

At Rockingham, the greens are well manicured and have been made more interesting by design. There are all kinds of bunkers along the length of the course which is also well known for its wildlife, birds, and many kangaroos. The kangaroos are not tame, although if you walk around with your golf clubs, they will more likely become your audience rather than run away.

With open bushland and generous fairways lined by grass trees along with old tuart trees, the par 72 layout can be challenging. A true benefit of this course is that other players are often out of view, enhancing the sensation that you are alone in the wilderness.

The club has a practice area for players including a driving range and there is a Pro shop that can provide both types of equipment for hire or purchase and motorized golf carts. The clubhouse is large and well-appointed and has a bar and bistro for players to enjoy and relax in after around.
