Formerly known as Lakewood Country Club, the St. Petersburg Country Club in Pinellas County, Florida, is an 18-hole golf course that opened in 1924 and was originally designed by Herbert Strong with subsequent renovations by Joe Lee. The name was changed in May of 2000 to reflect the sense of “The Club” of St. Petersburg and has been recognized as the only true private equity-owned club in the area.
The St. Petersburg Country Club golf course has a wonderful par 72 layout that is fair for players of all handicaps and challenging to the best players. The length of the routing from the championship tees is 6,912-yards, and the absence of parallel fairways allows for fast play and the enjoyment of solitude.
The best compliment to the layout is that there is not a bad hole on the course and St. Petersburg’s proximity to the Gulf and Tampa Bay guarantees a breeze with numerous direction changes. The strength of the golf course is in the middle with six consecutive par 4s. Holes 10 through 13 are good tests of golf, but after the par 3 at fourteen comes to the most challenging hole of the routing, the par 4 fifteenth.
As a private golf course, club membership is required before using any of St. Petersburg's facilities including its junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, 11 Har-Tru tennis courts, fitness center, as well as the dining and bar areas. Golf lessons and a well-stocked Pro shop are also available along with expansive practice greens and a driving range for members to warm up on
