Located approximately an hour and a half north of Auckland on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island and close to Bream Bay is the Tara Iti Golf Club. Widely regarded as the best course in the country and one of the finest in the world, Tara Iti's private 18-hole layout offers one of the Oceania Region's most challenging and picturesque links-style golfing opportunities.
Designed by renowned golf course architect Tom Doak and his team at Renaissancs Golf , the course routing at Tara Iti provides golfers with uninterrupted views of the islands of Little Barrier, Great Barrier, Mokohinau, and Tauranga which lie of the coast. The site which was originally covered in a thick forest of pine trees and wattles was almost entirely cleared thus allowing the naturally sandy site to be re-planted with native vegetation such as spinifex and the fescue grass that covers the fairways and greens.
Opened in late 2015 Tara Iti is unusual in that unlike most golf courses it does not attempt to test players through the use of water hazards, tree placement, and a punishing rough that heavily penalizes any errant play. Instead, it relies on large aesthetically pleasing sandy areas in place of formal bunker complexes as well as undulating fairways festooned with all manner of hillocky rises and rolling hollows to create complexity and encourage careful shot selection.
As would be expected at an elite golf club there are plenty of warm-up facilities at Tara Iti including a chipping area and putting green. The clubhouse is simple and modest in its design and has an airy atmosphere of understated luxury. Offering both bar and dining options it gives members and their guest the perfect place to relax after a round.
