The Lakes Golf Club is one of Australia's premier golf course and is located in Eastlakes; just 10 minutes drive from the Sydney CBD. Although a private club, limited visitor access to the serene environment and outstandingly presented playing surfaces is available.
The club was founded in 1928 when a group of local golfing purists considered the sand hills in Kingsford, as an excellent potential golf course site. The lake was part of the old Sydney water supply and the championship course was designed to make this a strategic element of the layout. A plan by world renowned course architects Eric Apperly and Tom Howard was laid down and soon a 6,210-metre layout with a par of 72 became an outstanding test of the game.
The course has undergone several layout changes since the original course was constructed. In 1968 Robert Von Hagge, re-designed the 18-hole layout and in 2007 the team from Ogilvy Clayton Design conducted a major redesign of the course.
The Lakes has a rich history as one of Australia's leading major tournament venues having hosted many events including the Australian PGA, Ampol Tournament, Chrysler Classic, Wills Masters, Johnnie Walker Classic, Greg Norman Holden International and the ANZ Championship. The course has also been the host venue for seven Australian Opens, the most recent being won by Abraham Ancer in 2018.
Due to the unique environment allocation within the Botany Water Reserve and the historical significance of the site, The Lakes Golf Club takes great pride in its approach to environmental issues. Through their Environmental Management Plan the club actively pursues the preservation of the wetlands area. The aim is to nurture an environment that will protect rare and distinct remnant vegetation and will provide a sanctuary for wildlife.
