The Vines Golf Club of Reynella is situated on the southern cusp of Adelaide's suburban fringes and South Australia's wine region is The Vines of Reynella. A 6,100-metre parkland course with natural undulations, it's visually impressive and presents a good golf standard. Renowned as the 'friendly club,' The Vines has a reputation as one of South Australia's better public courses.
Originally built in 1925 as a nine-hole course, The Vines has since undergone several redesigns. Now an 18-hole, par 71, it blends the feel of bush and country courses. In 1999, a financial injection saw a major overhaul to the course with new soil, hole reconfiguration, and its unforgiving valleys made into gentle undulations. On-site dams and stormwater reserves were added in the 2000s. Once an arid and tough course, the infrastructure enabled the growth of Santa Ana couch on the fairways and championship-standard Penncross bentgrass on the greens.
There are several 'blind' tees that utilize the natural lay of the land. A variety of uphill and downhill climbs can be challenging but rewarding. There are two 'signature' holes. The 3rd is a par 3 requiring absolute accuracy down the hundred-year-old redgum-line fairway. The 6th starts from an elevated tee, across a valley, with three bunkers sitting to the right of the green. Both are of a high standard and elevate the challenge of the course.
The Vines Golf Club of Reynella club has hosted a wide variety of competitions. From the high-end South Australian PGA Championship, Australian Open qualifying, and various Pro-am, PGA juniors, and pennant and members tournaments. The Vines currently ranks as Adelaide's 11th best course and in South Australia's top 15.
