The Tierra Del Sol Golf and Country Club features one of the few championship courses in The Villages not sitting on a major thoroughfare but is worth seeking out. The winding trek, which opened in 1996, offers a little bit of something for every player. The front nine used to be the back nine of nearby Hacienda Hills – the old starter's shack is still standing near the eighth tee box.
Tierra Del Sol means the" land of the sun" in Spanish, but players might believe a more apt name for this course might be the" land of old trees" as they take in the beauty of these massive, shady oaks that dive their limbs underground and before stretching back out into the sun. Now a part of Tierra, the Hernando De Soto front nine is a little more open than the back, so players can be aggressive as they play the beautiful layout adorned by some of the oldest oak trees in The Villages.
One of the most challenging 18-holes in The Villages, the Tierra Del Sol routing plays to over 6,800-yards. The layout tightens significantly after turning and starting the Ponce De Leon back nine. Players will wind their way south toward where Morse Boulevard meets County Road 466, which at one point marked the southernmost end of The Villages. The Ponce De Leon Course is punctuated grandly by one of the best closing three holes in its golf-crazed community.
Tierra Del Sol Golf and Country Club has had a rich history since opening in The Villages more than 20 years ago. In 1998, it played host to the LPGA Samsung World Championship of Women's Golf, won by Juli Inkster. The ladies' tour returned in 1999 and 2000 as the course hosted the $1 million LPGA Charity Championship. Players like Inkster, Nancy Lopez, Helen Alfredsson and Betsy King took on Tierra, one of the crown jewels in The Villages' extensive menu of golfing options.
Facilities at the club include a Pro shop, driving range, pitching and chipping area, and a putting green for golfers. The clubhouse bar and restaurant, swimming pool, billiards tables, and tennis courts offer players ample diversion while waiting for their tee time and a great spot to relax and unwind after a round.
