The Tokyo Golf Club is a members-only club and is located in Sayama City, Saitama Prefecture, about an hour and a half outside Tokyo's city center. The club first opened in 1914 in Komazama and was started by Junnosuke Inoue after he visited New York and saw golf courses there. The course was moved to Asaka in 1932, with a new layout by Charles H. Alison, who designed several courses in Japan during this time period.
The current 18-hole course, and the third incarnation of the Tokyo Golf Club, was built by Kohmyo Ohtani in 1940 based on the earlier layout by Alison. A signature feature of the par 72 courses is the two green complexes on each hole - named Asaka and Chichibu after prior locations for the club before it moved to its present site in northwest Tokyo. The club alternates the set of greens to be played on a daily basis.
In 2009 the club turned to golf course architect Gil Hanse to prepare a master plan for the club and renovate the Asaka green complexes. Hanse returned in 2017 to finish work on the Chichibu greens, as well as the fairway bunkers and teeing grounds.
The practice facilities at this world-renowned club include a driving range, putting green, and a chipping area.
In October 1963, the club celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding and in the same year, a new clubhouse was designed by Mr. Anthony Raymond, the same architect who had designed the clubhouse at Asaka. The simple rustic beauty of the clubhouse has served its members well and continues to provide both excellent bar and dining services.
