The 'Wagga Wagga' effect refers to the disproportionately high amount of sporting talent from this mid-sized New South Wales town. With two clubs, Wagga City appeals to the more casual golfer. For a town that excels in sport, this club has a self-styled impetus toward enjoyment and accessibility to all.
The Wagga City Golf Club club cites its 'putting the fun back in golf' which may allude to unchallenging design and average upkeep. However, Wagga City was designed by one-time British Open runner-up Wayne Grady. An almost even split between par 3s, 4s, and 5s, the bentgrass greens have a good variation in size, shape, and roll. The Kikuyu fairways are well maintained and the entire course is well landscaped with water features, native shrubbery, and walkways.
Water hazards come into play from the 9th but it's the hole before that which is the most notorious. With the first stroke index, the 423-meter par 4 requires a subtle leftward drive from the tee. Featuring one of the smallest and least predictable greens, it's a good challenge regardless of a player's skill set.
The club's encouragement of newcomers was exemplified when it became the first in Australia to allow under 17s to play for free. The variety of practice facilities - outdoor driving range, practice short game, and an indoor 'Golftec' simulator - are impressive and engaging for all players.
