Sitting idyllically on the shores of Lake Albert, Wagga Wagga Country Club was designed by four-time Australian PGA champion Dan Soutar. Since its initial planning in 1928 as a venue to quell the golfing desires of this sports-heavy town, it's gone on to become a top 100 New South Wales course. Five hours via car or an hour in the air from Sydney, 'Wagga' as it's affectionately known is an attractive, well-playing course.
As it slopes toward the river mouth, it's obvious the major feature is the slope and undulation. Though many greens are flat via their elevation, those that aren't are a strong challenge. From the common and reliable bentgrass variety, the greens run well, with all but three featuring greenside bunkers. The all-weather Kikuyu fairways are regularly rolled and run well as a result.
With five par 3s and 5s, there are plenty of challenging holes. The several blind tee shots and 36 bunkers are well placed without the course feeling over-reliant on them. The par 4 11th is the club's signature. Approximately 300 meters long, it doglegs right-to-left with a gum tree to the left tightening the mid-section of the fairway. The sloping, dual, front-bunkered green sits in front of a small ridge. Every shot here is an important one.
For those visiting, the club offers 'play and stay' style accommodation packages at hotels, motels, and townhouses in Wagga Wagga. An on-site pro shop, restaurant, and various function rooms exist within the clubhouse.
