Open to the public Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary is set midway between Auckland and Wellington, in the heart of the spectacular scenery of the Lake Taupo region. Wairakei offers golfers the opportunity to navigate their way through an 18-hole layout of exceptional beauty whilst listening to the abundant birdlife, meandering streams, and delightful waterfalls that are just some of the course's features.
Officially opened in 1970, Wairakei lies on 180-hectares of natural rolling countryside and was developed to meet the rigorous standards required for world-class competition. The course architecture was assigned to Commander John Harris, who combined with Michael Wolveridge and five times British Open winner Peter Thomson, produced New Zealand's first internationally recognized golf course.
Worldwide acclaim has been given to this sprawling par 72 walk or cart course which measures 6,460-metres from the championship tees. The layout utilizes natural contours to the fullest and is guarded by 108 large strategically placed bunkers.
In 2012 an agreement was established between Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary and the Department of Conservation to work cooperatively to make the most of conservation and restoration opportunities within Wairakei's fully fenced sanctuary which was the brainchild of owner Gary Lane. Around 25,000 native trees and five thousand exotics have been planted to encourage birdlife and further improve the park-like surroundings.
Golfers will find a well-stocked Pro shop and can warm up on the practice range or work on their short game with the bunker area and putting green. The clubhouse has both bar and dining options and the club is an excellent corporate golf venue.
