James Wilcher
Speaking about the philosophy of his company, Golf by Design, James Wilcher states, "for the game of golf to be enjoyed by all, a commercial imperative, a course must offer playing options of varying difficulty, and not favor players of specific ability. We achieve this through careful consideration of hazard placement; a range of teeing options; width of fairways; depth of rough; and the shape, size, and slope of greens. These strategic aspects of golf course design should never be obvious, rather they are revealed only after continual play. If this is done correctly, we encourage golfers to return time and again to discover the true nature of the course."
James Wilcher was once a design associate with Greg Norman Golf Course Design in Australia, where he was the principal designer on the Laguna Bintan course in Indonesia. In 1999 Wilcher left Norman's company and established his own design firm Golf by Design. Subsequent projects have included Pacific Dunes (NSW) and The Cut at Port Bouvard in Western Australia as well as the redesign of Elanora Country Club.
