Michael Coate
A prominent West Australian golf architect, Michael Coate started in the business with Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge but branched out by himself in the 1980s, establishing Michael Coate Golf Design. Michael is a member of the International Association of Golf Course Architects, has been personally responsible for the design of golf courses in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and India.
His most notable creation was the Links at Kennedy Bay when he teamed up in the late 1990s with tour players Ian Baker-Finch, winner of the 1991 British Open, and the late Roger MacKay. What they wanted was to give Western Australia a fitting tribute to the links courses of Scotland and Michael routed and principally designed the course. He also masterminded the Araluen Country Club along with MacKay.
