Robert Dean Putman

Robert Dean Putman is an American golf architect and designer who is known in Spain for his significant work on the famous North and South courses at La Manga Club. The design of both courses and the lie of the fairways were his major contribution that made the courses attractive to play. Putman was known to have brought a piece of California icon to Murcia, Spain. Incorporating in his design more than 3,000 palm trees created an impression that the resort was an enormous garden rather than just a golf course. This set a precedent on how future golf courses were to be built in the Murcia Region of Spain.

Robert Putnam was born on December 18, 1924, in Wallace, Idaho, United States. He later moved to Fresno, California where he studied and eventually settled. Putnam started out as a commercial artist before joining Bob Baldock, a California golf architect, as a draftsman in 1955. He later became Baldock's chief design assistant. In 1967, he went solo and opened his own golf design company based in Fresno, California. In the early 70's he became one of America's top golf designers in Europe.

Robert designed courses in California, throughout the United States, and in Europe.
