Shiro Akaboshi
Shiro Akaboshi was born in Toriizaka, Tokyo, in 1895. The fourth son of businessman Yanosuke Akaboshi, Shiro attended school in Japan before leaving for America, first for Lawrenceville School in New Jersey and then Princeton. He returned to Japan in 1921 and after completing a year of compulsory military service began working for Standard Oil.
After a few years he joined his younger brother in coaching golfers and in 1926 he was the winner of the Japan Amateur Golf Championship, such as the level of his own game. As a golf course designer, Shiro was heavily influenced by the great Charles H. Alison with whom he worked closely during Alison's whirlwind tour of Japan in 1930. Some of his more notable designs include the courses at Hakodate, Hakone Country Club, and Gotemba Golf Club.
Towards the later years of his career, he became heavily involved in the development and coaching of female professional golfers and acted as the honorary chairman of the Japan Women's Professional Golf Association.
