The Huntingdale Golf Club is conveniently located approximately 20-minutes from Melbourne's CBD and is a private 18-hole course open only to members and their guests.
Huntingdale's golf affiliations go back to 1896 when the Surrey Hills Golf Club was established. However, the club's current iteration and location are the results of a chance remark made in early 1938 by one of the members which elicited the fact that the old Melbourne Hunt Club grounds at East Oakleigh in Melbourne's famed sandbelt were available for purchase.
The course design was entrusted to C.H. Alison, an English golf architect, who worked entirely from models, contour plans, and written information as to the topography of the ground. Former curator, the late Sam Berriman, was co-opted to adapt Allison's designs to the terrain. The course opened in 1941, and the name Huntingdale Golf Club was adopted.
Rising to fame in March 1979 with the inaugural hosting of The Australian Masters, Huntingdale has emerged as one of the most recognizable golf courses in Australia and the world. In 2008, Huntingdale celebrated the 30th year of hosting the Australian Masters and was justifiably recognized as the 'Home of the Australian Masters'. Since 1979, Huntingdale has played host to some of the most famous names in world golf, including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Peter Thomson, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Norman Von Nida, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Ian Baker-Finch, John Daly, Tom Watson, Nick Price, and Tiger Woods.
Consistently rated as one of the best golf courses in Australia, Huntingdale greets players with superbly manicured fairways, strategic fairway bunkering, and large undulating greens. This combination of features ensures the par 73 course challenges the best professionals and the latest technology. The greens are true and fast and are generally kept in "Masters" condition throughout the year although players hitting wayward shots to the far side of the greens can anticipate long undulating putts. The final stretch of holes offers some of the toughest and finest finishing holes in the world.
The new $12 million clubhouse which was completed in August 2014 offers golfers an expansive Pro Shop and a full range of practice facilities. Like the course itself, the bar and dining options at Huntingdale are of the highest standard and very well staffed and managed. There are also excellent function spaces that can cater to events of almost any size.
