La Manga Golf South Course is considered to be one of the best courses in Spain, the South Course has been the venue for many top-level international golf tournaments. These include the Spanish Opens; the European Ladies Championship; Spanish PGA, Seniors, Ladies and Junior Championships; Ladies European Tour Q-School; the World Corporate Golf Challenge as well as countless golf events.
Located at the center of the valley, it is a long par 73 championship course at almost 7,107 yards (6,499 meters) in length as measured from the white tees. Robert Dean Putman designed the course in 1971 and was refashioned by Arnold Palmer in 2005.
The fairways is a classic. Wide and spacious with palm trees lining the fairways and plenty of bunkering. It has a good combination of short and long holes but is notorious for its water hazards which can be found on 15 of its 18 holes. Accuracy and distance are keys to navigating the fairways.
The South Course also has a glorious past. In 1975 American Legend Arnold Palmer famously finished with an eagle on the par 5 18th hole to win the Spanish Open by one shot. The victory was broadcasted around the world and introduced La Manga to the international audience.
The South is also where Otto Bucher had a hole in one at the par 3 12th hole, setting a record. How? He was the oldest at 99 years old at the time.
