A close 10 kilometers northeast of the Melbourne CBD is the desirable and leafy suburb of Alphington. The LaTrobe Golf Club is an 18 hole, visually appealing, and challenging golf club. With a complex history, nearly 70-years from its establishment, LaTrobe is a modern course of a high standard.
Many fairways at the course sit alongside the city-splitting Yarra River on one side and native red gum trees along with the other. The river gives the course some subtle undulations. The layout, architected by local Sam Berriman, has abundant bunkers and billabongs across the course. Consistently well maintained, there's a lot of challenging but high-level play on offer.
The 16th hole is near the longest and most challenging. The fairway contours before a dogleg. To the left of the sharp turn is a water hazard and bunker that catches many tee shots. The green slopes back to front with bunkers at the front-left and back-right. It's a challenging but memorable hole.
The clubhouse at LaTrobe is of a rare high standard, recently renovated and with no expense spared. There are two large and enjoyable practice facilities on-site. The club regularly hosts a wide variety of competitions and championships for almost all demographics and abilities.
Without a membership, pre-booking is essential to play LaTrobe Golf Club. However, the on-site pros and members hold a reputation for their friendliness, while the pricing is one of the most affordable when it comes to this standard in Melbourne.
