Located at Cranbourne, close to Melbourne, Ranfurlie Golf Club opened for play in 2001 and is a member-only course that allows limited public access.
The 18 holes feature wide fairways, big putting surfaces, and visually intimidating bunkering from tee to green. Ranfurlie combines elements of traditional links with sandbelt-style bunkering to produce a true test of golf.
The fairways of this par 72 layout might be generous in width, but the key is to play the course from the edges. A drive up the middle of the fairway might give a good lie for the next shot, but the angle of approach into the green might be so difficult that there is next to no chance of getting a shot close.
One can imagine design great Vernon Morcom would have given this layout a tick of approval for its strategic challenge and the enjoyment it offers golfers of all standards.
Ranfurlie Golf Club has a pro shop as well as first-class warm-up facilities, including a practice fairway and a dedicated short game area, that are only open to members. Carts and hire equipment are available too.
The modern clubhouse boasts not only a sports bar and bistro, with function rooms but also panoramic views of the course and the city skyline in the distance.
