Royal St George’s Golf Club

Royal St George's Golf Club, founded in 1887 and intended by its founder, Dr. William Laidlaw Purves, to be a rival to St Andrew's, is consistently ranked amongst the world's leading courses. The club's 18-hole layout in Sandwich, Kent, occupies a unique place in the history of golf, for it was there in 1894, that the Open Championship was first played outside Scotland.

Royal St George's is situated on the same stretch of coastline as Royal Cinque Ports and neighboring Prince's Golf Clubs, both former Open Championship venues. In all there have been 14 Open Championships played at St George's, more than any course outside of Scotland.

The par 70 layout features multiple blind or partially blind shots, although the unfairness element of the original design has been reduced by several twentieth-century modifications. Frank Pennink made significant changes during the 1970s by removing the blindness of some fairways and altering pin locations.

In 1981 and 2003 Donald Steele was responsible for extending a half dozen tees, the removal of further blind aspects, and the shifting of the famous 14th green closer to the out of bounds fence. The course now measures 7,204-yards and also possesses the deepest bunker in championship golf, located on its fourth hole.

A full range of practice facilities is on offer including a driving range, pitching area, practice nets, and putting green. The clubhouse has a Pro Shop with caddies available for hire and there are also excellent bar and dining facilities where golfers can relax after their round.
