Established in 1972, Villamartin Golf Club is one of the best and first golf courses in the Valencia Region. It is a challenging par-72 layout that plays beyond 6,900 yards and is one of the courses attached to the luxurious La Finca Resort. The 18-hole championship course was designed by the legendary architect Robert Dean Putman, who also designed the North and South courses at La Manga.
A mature course with various types of vegetation, the layout of the course takes full advantage of the natural rolling terrain with mature olive trees lining the fairways. The front nine holes are built on hilly ground with the highest point offering spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea. The back nine is situated in valleys with steep ravines coming into play on several holes.
The greens at Villamartin Golf Club are of international quality. In fact, Villamartin played host to the 1994 Mediterranean Open which was won by Jose Maria Olazabal after an exciting play-off with Paul McGinley. The course also hosted the European qualifying circuit in 1997. The likes of Severiano Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal, Ian Woosnam, and many other international players have competed here.
The course is very diverse with par three Hole 17th described as one of the best European “short” holes. It measures just 220m in length but the shot from the tee has to cross a tree-lined deep ravine that protects the hole.
The recently restored clubhouse has a Moorish style design with ceramic tiles. It has a great restaurant and a roof terrace with a magnificent view of the 18th hole.
