Charles Mark Mahannah Jr.
Charles Mark Mahannah Jr. (1929 – 2020) was the son of the late Mark Mahannah Sr. and president of Mark Mahannah and Co., which has been designing golf courses for 60 years. The company has designed approximately 50 golf courses, including the Jacaranda and Bonaventure courses in Fort Lauderdale, the Boca Teeca in Boca Raton, and the Royal Palm Beach course in Palm Beach.
Charles was a visionary and he spread a little gospel of golf at every project he worked on, whether it was a course in his own backyard in Florida, or halfway around the world in Japan. In 1985 he teamed up with legendary Professional Golfer Lee Trevino and together, they completed golf courses in Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and other diverse locations throughout the United States.
Charles truly understood the game and the art of creating championship golf course layouts, not just for the professionals, but for the millions of golfers around the world. His philosophy of making the game challenging – but a fair challenge – for the average golfer, was imprinted in many of his designs. He was brilliant at providing a balance of fun and difficulty, where a player can always recover from an errant shot. Quite simply, he designed golf courses you wanted to come back to.
