In 1988 John Spencer along with Graeme Grant-two highly respected superintendents (from Huntingdale and Kingston Heath golf courses respectively) approached Jack Newton to join them and the three started the firm which became Newton, Grant & Spencer.
After 15 years Newton decided to start his own company and John became his consultant. Sadly John passed away not long after on the 16th of May 2009. Spencer, who helped pioneer the development of pure couch fairways in Melbourne, was involved in the design of new courses at both the June Country Club in Ibaraki, Japan, and The Links Lady Bay Resort on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia.
John Spencer also contributed to the course alteration at Victoria's Kingston Heath, Huntingdale, The Grange, and Kooyonga in South Australia. In New South Wales he was also involved in the partial redevelopment/redesign of The Lakes, Riverside Oaks, Pymble, and the New South Wales Golf Course.
