Lane Marshall
Lane Lee Marshall was born on September 19, 1937, in Syracuse, New York, and passed away aged 65 at his home in Topeka, Kansas, in 2003. Before his death, Lane designed many famous Florida golf courses such as the layouts at Myakka Pines Golf Club, Lansbrook Golf Club, Manatee County Golf Course, Maple Leaf Golf and Country Club, and Tarpon Woods Golf Club. He also led the design of the Williston Municipal Golf Course in North Dakota and the Gillespie routing at the Bobby Jones Golf Club.
From 1957 to 1963, Lane served in the U.S. Army with more than a year on active duty. He then finished his studies at the University of Florida wherein he was awarded the first Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Landscape Architecture. Lane continued his academic studies and finished his master's degree at the University of Illinois.
In 196, Lane Marshall founded his own landscape architecture firm in Sarasota, Florida, where he practiced his skills for more than 20 years. Thus, at that time, many Florida layouts were designed by his firm. He also became a respected member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and was, at one time, the organization's president. After decades of work, Lane chose to close his company and took a teaching position at Texas A&M University. From 1989 to 1995, Lane was hired by the Kansas State University College of Architecture and Design to become its dean but eventually resigned due to medical reasons.
